The Cebu Foodbank and SimplyShare team facilitated several key activities including the visit of Mr. Kurt Schultz, consultant of the Global Foodbanking Network (GFN), accompanied through our long-time nearby accomplice Mr. Jomar Fleras of Rise in opposition to HungerPH.

The Global Foodbanking Network (GFN) is a non-profit organization that supports community-led solutions to alleviate hunger in nearly 50 countries. In 2019, GFN launched the Food Bank Accelerator program to help newly established food banks serve more people, more efficiently. The program is designed to accelerate the development of newer food banks in regions where food insecurity is high and resources are limited. The GFN’s Food Bank Accelerator program is a vital initiative that helps to address the urgent need for food security in communities around the world.

The Food Bank Accelerator program is essential because it provides newly established food banks with the resources, knowledge, and expertise needed to become self-sustaining and effective. The program participants are paired with experienced food bank professionals who provide guidance and support on various aspects of food banking, including logistics, operations, and fundraising. The Accelerator program helps food banks to grow rapidly while simultaneously building solid foundations that will enable them to serve their communities effectively. The program has been successful in helping food banks to distribute more food and grocery products to those in need. In 2022, food banks in the Accelerator program distributed more than 18.4 million kilograms of food, a 32% growth over the previous year.

The Food Bank Accelerator program works by providing new food banks with a range of resources and support. The program includes in-person and virtual training sessions, mentorship from experienced food bank professionals, and access to a network of food bank leaders around the world. The program also includes an audit visit to assess areas like governance, product traceability, financial accountability, and more. The program’s goal is to help food banks become self-sustaining and effective in serving their communities. The program has been successful in helping food banks to grow and distribute more food and grocery products to those in need, like Food Banking Kenya’s 4,000% increase in food distribution since joining the Accelerator Program in 2019. Overall, the Food Bank Accelerator program is a critical initiative that helps to address the urgent need for food security in communities around the world.
